Cambric CEO Reflects on 20 Years of Adding Value to Manufacturers
Says the International Engineering Firm Incorporates Lessons Learned as It Looks to a Promising Future
SALT LAKE CITY (Feb 27, 2009) — In the fall of 1989, Cambric Corporation, known first as Cambric Graphics, came to life as a cost-effective gateway into the world of digital engineering for its customers. The company focused on transforming legacy engineering drawings into intelligent computer aided design (CAD) files. Cambric also sublet engineering workstations and applications. Much of this work was done using an international subcontractor work force and with proprietary software solutions.

The company slowly matured its outsourcing model over the ensuing ten years. “We had many good international partners during that period. We moved work through Mexico, Canada, and India. Over time, however, we came to the realization that in order to deliver the consistent quality that Cambric had come to represent, we needed to have greater control over the engineering,” said Tim Hayes, President and CEO, and an employee of Cambric for over 14 years.
“It was in 1997 that we opened our first engineering center, in Romania, which had gained its footing after the fall of the Iron Curtain. Romania was an ideal location because of low wages and a high concentration of engineers needing work. We found Romanian engineers to be creative and to have a very strong work ethic,” Mr. Hayes said. “As time has marched on, outsourcing services has become a standard mode of operation for world class companies; we found a need, amongst manufacturers, for higher-end engineering services outsourcing. Filling this need has been a natural progression for us. In the last ten years we have built a global matrix of qualified engineers in locations around the world. Over 60 percent of the work we perform today is design, analysis, and project management work. Being a low-cost supplier of high-end work is our true niche.
“Times are rough for nearly every company now with the global economy in a down-cycle. However, we feel that the future is bright! Our theme this anniversary year is, ‘20/20 - Learning from the Past, Engineering the Future.’ We’ve had twenty great years, thanks to our loyal customers, and have learned a lot through the thick and thin of that time. As a global organization we see the next years ahead as a challenge and as a great opportunity. That’s what the 20/20 theme is about. We will continue to learn and grow as we bring engineering excellence to the world,” Mr. Hayes said.
